The Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Songs of all time

  개인적인 편차는 있겠지만 차트를 보는 것은 재밌다. 사실, 음악이 주는 감동에 순위가 있는 것은 아니지만, 너무나 많은 음악의 바다 속에서 새로운 곡과 아티스트를 찾기 위해서 일렬도 낸 차트라는 것은 상당히 '효과'적인 방법이 될 수 있다. 미국을 대표하는 대중음악 언론인 롤링스톤에서 록앤롤 역사 상 가장 위대한 500곡을 선정했다. 롤링스톤에서 꾸준히 유사한 이벤트를 기획해왔고 결과조차도 사실 충분히 예상 가능하지만 예상과 어느 정도 일치하느냐를 보는 것도 순위를 보는 방법이 될 수 있다. 또, 앨범의 종합성이나 아티스트의 포괄적인 음악적 성과를 얘기하는 것이 아닌 곡을 보는 것도 나름대로 재밌는 이슈가 될 듯 하다.

 

  이글의 취지는 가장 전통있고 권위있는 팝의 중심지인 미국에서 어떻게 평가를 내리는가를 살펴보자는데에 있다. 롤링스톤의 관점이 절대적이지는 않고 심지어 상당히 왜곡되어있다 하더라도 충분히 볼 가치는 있다. 롤링스톤은 여전히 괜찮은 관점을 제시하고 있으며 왜곡된 관점 역시 비판적으로 받아들이면 그만인 것이다.

 

좋은 록음악은 시대 정신의 구현

(밥딜런 사진)어느 정도 예상되던 바지만 밥딜런의 Like a rolling stone이 롤링스톤 선정 최고의 곡으로 선정되었다. 아마도 롤링스톤의 태동에도 Like a rolling stone이라는 곡은 많은 영향을 미쳤을 것으로 예상된다. 포크의 시대 정신과 록앤롤의 활기가 만나는 절묘한 시점에 나온 곡이며 당대의 시대정신과 더불어 자유분방함이라는 록앤롤의 지침을 제시한 곡으로 손색이 없다. 롤링스톤이라면 내릴 수 밖에 없는 필연적인 선택.

 

  1위를 차지한 Like a Rolling Stone 뿐만 아니라 롤링스톤즈의 (I can't get no) Satisfaction, 존레논의 Imagine, 마빈 게이의 What's going on, 너바나의 Smells Like a Teen Spirit, 더 후의 My Generation 등 최상위 권에 오른 곡들을 보면 롤링스톤이 가장 중요시하는 판단 기준은 '시대 정신의 표출'이라는 것을 알 수 있다. 10위권의 모든 곡이 그 시대의 정신을 대표하기에 충분하며 음악사적으로도 하나의 전환점이 된 곡이다.

 

  확실히, 그들은 시대정신을 얘기하는 뮤지션, 아티스트, 그리고 작가에 대해서는 확실히 밀어준다. 여기에는 적절한 선에서의 타협이 있다. 막나가거나 미국의 이데올로기에서 지나치게 벗어나고 대중의 선택을 받지 못한 뮤지션에게 그들은 관심없다. 그들이 케리를 선택했다는 것을 잘 알려진 사실이다. 하지만, 그들에게 가장 정치적인 밴드 중 하나였던 'Dead Kennedy'에 대해서는 별로 관심이 없는 것 같다.

 

롤링 스톤이 선호하는 뮤지션

  가장 많은 곡을 올린 뮤지션은 이번에도 예외없이 23곡을 올린 비틀즈였다. 비틀즈만큼이나 밥딜런의 곡이 많다는 것-22곡이 올라와 있다-도 주목할만한 사실이다. 롤링스톤즈가 14곡, 엘비스 프레슬리가 11으로 요즘 자주 쓰는 표현을 쓰자면 지금 언급한 4 뮤지션이 롤링스톤에서 바라본 록앤롤의 4대 천황이라 할 수 있겠다. 비틀즈는 록앤롤을 부활시켰고 록음악의 음악적 지평을 넓혔다는 점에서, 밥딜런은 록앤롤에 시대정신을 부여했으며 미국적 록음악의 프로토 타입을 제시했다는 점에서, 롤링스톤즈는 가장 탁월하고 전형적인 록앤롤 밴드라는 점에서, 엘비스 프레슬리는 록앤롤은 만든 세대를 대표하는 뮤지션이라는 점에서 록앤롤 사상 최고의 뮤지션이라는데에 대해 이의의 여지가 없다. 또한, 이 4명의 뮤지션은 '당대의 음악과 문화 아이콘을 심도있게 다루고 젊은이들의 기성세대들에 대한 외침까지 싣는다'라는 롤링스톤 창간 당시 기본 방침으로 봐도 충분히 호평을 받을만한 뮤지션이다.

 

  아래는 다수의 곡을 올린 뮤지션들의 순위이다. 이 순위를 보자면 롤링 스톤이 어떤 뮤지션을 높게 평가하는지를 쉽사리 알 수 있다. 7곡을 올려놓은 The Drifters라는 밴드가 눈에 띄는데 50년대 초반부터 R&B Vocal Group의 전통을 가장 먼저 세우고 가장 오랫동안 활동한 업적을 롤링스톤즈에게서 높게 평가한 것으로 보인다. 롤링스톤의 성향을 보자면 프로그레시브록 등 그들의 비위를 건드린 몇몇 장르를 제외하자면 상당히 다양한 장르에서 선구적이고 원형질을 구축한 뮤지션에 대해서는 상당히 호의적인 성향을 보인다는 것을 알 수 있다.

  2곡이상을 올린 아티스트의 곡이 370곡이다.. 역시 롤링 스톤은 몰아주기를 좋아한다. 비틀즈와 롤링스톤즈를 빼면 역시 미국 뮤지션이 다수를 차지한다. 60~70년대를 넘어서면 영국 쪽 뮤지션 마저도 푸대접을 받고 있다. NME라면 당연히 상위권을 점유할만한 영국의 국민밴드 오아시스, 블러는 물론이고 Stone Roses의 곡도 전무하다. 어짜피 미국 언론이고 미국의 시장이 가장 크니 당연한 결과일 수 있다. 그런데, 왜 USA나 영어권이나 말은 생략하고 왜 그냥 Greatest라는 말을 쓰냐는 것이다. 그들의 표현은 중국인의 중화주의를 훨씬 능가하는 자기 중심성을 내포하고 있다. 그들이 지난 음악에 대해서 재평가를 거듭하는 것도 세계를 지배하고 있는 팝음악이 미국에서 시작되었음 확인하는 수단이 될 수 있다.

 

록앤롤은 죽었나?

년대 별로 정렬해보면 다음과 같다.

  60, 70년대가 70%, 거기서도 60년대가 40%이상을 차지한다. 좀 지나치다 싶을 정도로 특정 기간에 편중되어 있다. 우선, 최근 음악일수록 아직 음악사적 역할을 평가하기에 이르다고 판단할 수 있다. 20~30년이 지나면 지금 평가가 덜 된 곡이나 뮤지션 중 크게 평가될 뮤지션이 있을 것이다. 

 

 하지만, 그것을 감안하더라도 80년대 이후 급격한 감소세는 설명이 부족하다. 90년대 이후 모던 록이라는 큰 범주에 들만한 대형밴드들의 곡은 너바나 정도를 제외하자면 거의 선정되지 않았다. 록을 정의하는 음악들과 영향력이 큰 음악들이 그만큼 70년대 이전에 많이 나왔다는 얘기도 될 수 있고 80년대 이후 록을 통한 아티스트의 영감이 급격히 쇄락했다는 뜻도 된다. 롤링스톤은  70년 대 초반부터 그들은 록앤롤에 사망선고를 내렸는데, 그들의 관점에서 보자면 록앤롤은 불꽃처럼 타들어가기보다는 서서히 사라지는 길을 택한 것 같다.

다시 말하자면, 롤링스톤은 90년대 이후 나온 대부분의 음악들에 대해 이전의 창조물에 대한 답습 이상의 의미를 부여하지 않는다고 볼 수 있다.

  2000년대는 5년이라는 시간이 흘러가지만 단 3곡. 그 중 Eminem이 2곡인데 역시 21세기 엘비스라는 극찬에 걸맞는 대우를 해주고 있다. 세명 모두 흑인 음악이라는 것도 인상적이다. 한 10여년 쯤 누군가가 힙합과 랩에 대해 과거 록앤롤의 모습과 너무나 유사하다고 했는데, 시한부 선거를 받고 숨을 할딱거리고 있는 록음악에 비해 힙합과 랩은 아직도 새로운 무엇인가를 보여주고 있다는 것이 그들의 판단일 듯 싶다. 다시 생각해봐도 Stan, Lose yourself, Hey ya!만한 곡이 2000년도 이후로는 없었던 것 같다.

 

그들이 평가하는 예술성?

  마이클 잭슨이나 머라이어 캐리, 휘트니 휴스턴 등은 전무하다. 이것만 보자면 롤링 스톤은 상업성과 어느 정도의 거리를 두는 듯한 뉘앙스를 주나 실은 그렇지도 않다.  문화 아이콘을 반영한다는 점에서 뭇남성을 설레게할 노출이 심한 여성 연예인들의 사진이 표지를 지속적으로 장식했지만 브리트니의 곡에  Greatest라는 수식어를 달아주기는 심히 부끄러웠던 모양이다. 그들의 작태는 늘 그래왔다. 

 

  롤링스톤은 70년대 초반부터 일부의 록음악에는 예술성이 있다고 정의를 했다. 하지만, 그들은 록음악의 예술성을 새롭게 규정했다. 로버트 프립 옹이 아무리 탁월한 음악을 만들어도 롤링에 킹크림슨의 자리는 없다. 그들이 보기에 킹크림슨은 대중성을 버리고 록앤롤의 원시성을 버린 난해하고 현학적인 음악이기 때문이다. 그들이 정의하는 록앤롤의 예술성은 클래식의 예술성과는 확실히 거리를 두는 것이며 어디까지나 록앤롤의 테두리 안에서 보여주는 예술성이다. 롤링 스톤은 트랜드를 주도한 밴드, 상업성과 로우파이, 예술성 사이에서 적절히 줄다리기를 한다. 모순된 부분이 결코 적지 않지만 높게 평가할

부분도 있다. 그들은 적어도 록앤롤의 정체성에 대해서 꾸준히 고민을 하고 있다. 

 

마치며

  그들의 비평 방식과 선정성은 비판의 여지도 많지만 확실히 중요한 가치를 담고 있다. 시대에 따라 변화도 있어왔지만 창간 취지에 맞는 고집이 있고 그 고집에 따라 늘 뚜렷한 담론을 양산하고 있다는 점이다. 또한, 이러한 담론은 매체를 통해 대중과 소통하며 새로운 문화의 방향을 리드하기도 한다.
