카지노


영화는 라스베가스라는 공간이 (적어도 겉으로는) 양성화되는 과정에서 복잡한 갱스터의 조직이 일망타진되는 과정을 담고 있다. 갱스터와 뒷골목이라는 소재가 마틴 스콜세지의 장기인 것처럼 미국의 역사 역시도 존 포드가 되고 싶은 마틴 스콜세지의 주재료다. 이번에는 라스베가스 편이며 본토박이보다 사막에서 다른 지역의 이방인 갱스터들이 뜨내기로 오고가는 라스베가스의 특성을 효과적으로 잡아내고 있다.
도박과 갱스터 그리고 연기파 배우의 조합은 전형적인 갱스터 무비를 예상케 하지만 이 영화는 예상외로 파격적인 실험성으로 구성되어 있다. 배우들의 대화보다 음악과 나레이션이 동시에 영화의 러닝타임을 촘촘히 채우며 영화는 전개된다. 사실, 이런 방식은 긴 상황을 간결하게 정리할 때 사용되고 영화적으로 풀어가기 힘든 복잡한 상황에 대한 연출력의 부족을 메꾸기 위해 사용되는데 마틴 스콜세지는 역으로 에너지 넘치는 영상 편집에 처음부터 나레이션과 음악을 덪붙혀 3시간을 뚝심있게 밀고 나간다. 그 덕택에 3시간짜리 뮤직비디오도, 록오페라도, 뮤지컬도 아닌 기묘한 장르가 만들어졌다. 3시간의 실험적 장르를 보면 피곤하거나 지루해지지만 그리고 이런 소재의 영화는 결과도 예상되지만, 이 영감쟁이는 3시간을 끊임없이 다음 장면을 궁금하게 만든다. 영화의 시작은 바흐로 시작하지만 예상대로 이건 페이크고 마틴 스콜세지의 주특기인 블루스, 소울, 록앤롤이 집요하게 사용된다. 영화의 사운드트랙은 2디스크로 31곡이지만 실제 영화에 사용된 곡은 무료 62곡이며!!! 이중 롤링 스톤즈의 곡이 7개 사용되었다.
