UDO Preview - Santana

90년대 초반 에릭클랩튼의 Unplugged가 Grammy와 시장을 석권한 이후 거물 노장들의 선전이 눈에 띄었다. 특히 뚜렷한 트렌드가 없는 시기로 기억되는-그리고 여전히 지속되고 있는-90년대 후반 이후 그 현상은 가속도를 붙여갔다. 세기말의 회고와 향수, 복고에 대한 사람들의 반응이 하나의 원인인 것은 사실이지만 무엇보다 새로운 뮤지션들의 '영감의 고갈'이 가장 큰 원인이 아닐까 생각이 든다. 그리고 한편으로 노장이라 불리는 뮤지션들이 방황의 시대를 거쳐 정신적 육체적으로 안정을 찾아간 것 역시 좋은 작품들이 나온 이유가 될 수 있다.

아무튼, 이중에서 상업적으로 가장 성공한 작품은 단연 Santana의 Supernatural이었다. Shaman과 All that I am의 3부작으로 이어진 이 작품은 'Smooth'의 두드러진 히트에 힘입은 바 컸지만 전반적으로 앨범의 짜임새도 괜찮았다. 요즘 뜨는 뮤지션과 노장 산타나의 결합은 에너지와 영감의 교감이라는 측면에서 서로에게 윈윈이 될 수 있는 거래였다. Supernatural은 또 나와야했던 앨범이었다. 시장은 새로운 상품과 새로운 소비를 찾게 마련이며 히스패닉은 미국 내 더할 나위없이 좋은 타겟이 되었다.

돌이켜 봤을 대, Supernatural이 과연 Abraxas나 앨범 Santana를 능가하는 앨범인지에 대해서는 이견이 있다. 그들의 초창기 음악이 주는 걸쭉한 느낌에 비해 Supernatural은 너무 매끈한 앨범이다. Abraxas가 장터에서 있는대로 마구 넣고 먹는 푸짐한 비빔밤이라면 Supernatural은 비빔밥 체인점에서 먹는 깔끔한 맛이라고 할까? 거기에다가 머쉬룸과 와인이라는 이전의 주요한 재료는 온가족이 함께할 수 있는 건전한 음식문화를 위해 빼먹고. 장시간 환각의 미로를 걷기에는 요즘 세상은 너무나 변했다. 하지만, 적어도 장인의 터치는 비빔밥이 편의점의 인스턴트 식품으로 변질되는 것은 허용하지 않았다. Smooth는 들을수록 감탄하게 되는 곡이다. 퍼커션과 브라스의 사운드가 풍성하고 보컬은 맛깔나지만 그 와중에서도 Santana의 기타가 더욱 광채를 발휘할 수 있도록 자리를 확실히 만들어주고 있다. 이는 어떤 면에서 30년동안 발전한 사운드 엔지니어링에 힘입은 바도 크리라 생각된다.

 

p.s. Smooth 가사 정도는 외워서 따라부르는 센스를 발휘해야겠다. 영어 안되는 선영님들 아니 미찌코 상들, 눈이 똥그라지도록 만들며 욘사마의 슬럼프를 매꿔야겠다는  생각.
