리처드 링클레이터의 초기작이면서 70년대를 거친 야구부 남자애들의 음악 이야기를 담은 데이즈 앤 컨퓨즈드(레드 제플린의 연주 위주의 곡)의 후속작과도 같은 성격의 영화이기에 당연히 음악 영화다. 심지어 제목도 전작처럼 80년대 반헤일런의 연주 위주의 곡, 에브리바디 원츠 썸!! !!(느낌표2) 역시도 그대로 따왔다.
야구부 대학 신입생의 노는 것에 대한 이야기는 사실 전혀 중요하지 않다. 리차드 링클레이터는 그 누구보다도 자기의 이야기를 하면서도 상업적인 성공을 거둔 정말 귀한 작가다. 자신에게 중요했던 것을 확실히 부각하기 때문에 걸작의 필요조건이 완결성 같은게 부족해 보일 수 있지만 걸작이 주는 그 이상의 감정적 동요를 끌어오기도 한다. 음향과 영상이 동등하다는 장뤽고다르의 잘난척과 허세와 공정한척이 범범된 거짓말과 달리 음악이 영상만큼 또는 그 이상으로 중요하다. 차로 질주하면서 나오던 낵의 로큰롤, 마이 샤로나, 블루스록이 나오던 남자들이 마초적인 허세로 노가리 까는 팍스라는 펍, 디스코가 나오면서 남녀 쌍쌍이 춤을 추는 사운드 머신, 기숙사에서 마리화나 빨면서 잘난 척하면서 듣던 핑크 플로이드, 원을 그리면서 노는 펑크 클럽, 남녀 모두 마초성에 빠져 막놀 때의 하드록, 반헤일런, 문학과 예술을 생각했던 글램 파티까지. 장르로 구분될 수도 있는 음악의 양식과 거기에 걸맞은 공간까지. 음악이 80년대의 음악을 리처드 링클레이터와 같은 남자애들이 듣던 방식을 상기하며 음악으로 영화를 이어가는 하나의 뮤지컬같은 영화다.
이야기에 음악이 종속된다면 여기에 흐르는 음악에 대한 감정을 느낄 수 어렵다면 영화의 포스터와 영화 속 끝없이 흐르는 음악과 음악과 관련된 장소들을 굳이 무시하면서 '영화적 해석'을 강조한다면이 영화는 봤다고 하기가 어렵다.
