  너무 재밌었어요. 거리를 두고 신기하게 보는 오리엔탈리즘 식의 접근이 아닌 사회의 어두운 곳에 밀착하여 그 속에 밝은 부분을 찾고 키워가려는 노력이 너무나 아름답게 보였습니다. 물론, 제3세계라 불리는 지역을 계몽의 대상으로 본다는 그런 비판도 있을 수 있겠지만, 그러기에는 너무나 가슴에 와 닺는 부분이 많습니다.

  어머니가 포주에 의해 타죽는 극한의 상황에서도 맑은 모습을 유지하고 있는 아이들, 성숙한 의식과 뛰어난 재능을 가진 아이들,,,이런 아이들이 태어난 환경 때문에 매음굴의 생활을 되풀이한다는 것은 너무나 가슴 아픈 일입니다.

  의료조사 사업 나갔을 때 기초수급권자 아주머니 밑에서 자라는 아이를 보았습니다. 아이가 정신적으로 좀 아팠습니다. 다소 저지능 증상이었죠. 그런데, 그 아주머니는 바는 생활 때문에 제대로 검사도 못해줬습니다. 도대체 학교에 선생이라는 인간들은 뭐하는 인간들일까요? 자신의 제자가 병들어 있는데 촌지나 바라는 인간이 선생 월급 받을 자격있는 인간일까요?

In the face of abject poverty, abuse, and despair, these kids have little possibility of escaping their mother’s fate or for creating another type of life. In Born into Brothels, directors Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman chronicle the amazing transformation of the children they come to know in Sonagachi. Biskt, a professional photographer, gives them lessons and cameras, igniting latent sparks of artistic genius that reside in these children who live in the most sordid and seemingly hopeless world. The photographs taken by the children are not merely examples of remarkable observation and talent: they reflect something much large, morally encouraging, and even politically volatile: art as an immensely liberating and empowering force. Devoid of sentimentality, Born into Brothels defies the typical tear-stained tourist snapshot of the global underbelly. Briski spends years with these kids and becomes part of their lives. She hadn’t counted on the presence, energy, and avid curiosity of the children, who wanted to know all about her and her camera. In 2000, with the support of a Soros OSI Fellowship, she returned to Calcutta to teach the children photography. She invited filmmakers Ross Kauffman to accompany her and follow the stories of the children. Born into Brothels is the result of this collaboration. Their fathers, exploiting their mothers, go on the needle. Abject poverty, abuse, and despair consist of the kids’ everyday lives. In the face of this situation, even the kids have little dream for the future. Girls are destined to be the prostitutes like their mothers, boys are supposed to sell the liquor from the early morning. However, this work represents the fids there devoid of sentimentality. Briski, a professional photographer, come to know the children in the red light district and gave them lessons and cameras. The photographs taken by the children are not only examples of talent but they reflect the world they belong to with keen observations. Aunt Zana, the director, tries to introduce these photos outside India because she believes that would be an only liberating way for the children there. Briski spends years with these kids and becomes part of their lives rather than represents the kids and the lives in the red district as mere object of the work.
